1913, A Love Story

Luther held his gray wool cap tightly down over his ears as he walked up the hill away from the flood waters. He was just 18 years old...stuck in the middle of the most devastating flood to ever hit Cincinnati Ohio.

He headed for high ground on his way home from working at the saw mill. Even the ground on the hill was soggy. The entire Ohio River Valley was flooded. Devastation and lost people were all around.  They began gathering on the hill.

Luther had one thought in his mind, he needed to find Mary. The crying of women and children along with the shouts of men...faded into the memory of he and Mary kissing last summer by the calm, sleepy river. She was sternly forbidden by her father to even speak to Luther. John Harvel was a very successful jeweler and his daughter was not to mingle with peasants such as Luther McLidden.

The young hard nosed Irishman and the determined society princess were not about to let anything stand in the way of love. It was an Indian summer day in October of 1912.  Mary had driven her buggy to meet Luther in the meadow near the old Cane Mill. She was wearing a beautiful red dress that her father had purchased from Paris.

Her large flopping hat was pinned to her hair to keep it on during the ride. As Luther helped her from the buggy...she asked,"Do you like my new dress?" Luther gave her a pecking kiss on the cheek and said in his thick Irish accent,"Oh lass...ya would surely look fine in sack cloth to me."

Mary giggled..saying,"Perhaps a reddish sack cloth...with a bit of lace." They walked hand in hand across the meadow to the old mill house. Luther guided the horse and buggy behind the building where he had already prepared a pile of fresh grass and a bucket of water for the horse.

He opened the large squeaking wooden door...bowed and said,"Me lady...step into our Castle please." Mary smiled and walked in the large room and stood by the large, broken in half, mill stone. Luther retrieved a white woven basket from the buggy that was covered with a red and white striped table cloth. He handed the table cloth to Mary and she spread it over the larger piece of stone.

Mary then set out baked chicken and rolls along with a bottle of wine she had stolen from her father's wine closet. Luther convinced her to remove her large hat and he placed it gently on a barrel by a broken window. They ate their lunch and sipped their wine while talking of plans to run away to California. The old abandoned mill had been their meeting place all summer long.

They had met there secretly, talked, kissed and Luther had even touched her knees the last time they met. He had laid his head in her lap.  She stroked his curly red hair as he softly touched her calves and then all the way to her knees. She decided to stop him when she noticed that something was astir in his wool trousers.

This time...Luther could see and feel a change in Mary's mood. Her eyes sparkled in the light of the window and even her smile was different. She told him that she wished for him to turn away and close his eyes. Luther did as she said while laughing at her silly game. She hummed an old Waltz song as Luther tapped his foot from his obvious impatience.

Mary then said softly,"You may turn and open your eyes my love." Luther turned and first saw her red dress and unlaced boots laid upon the mill stone. He swallowed hard as he saw Mary standing in her undergarments. He could see her beautiful body beneath the thin lacy, cotton slip. Luther stared and grinned...it was as if he were frozen in the moment. Mary giggled and said,"Well sir....are you going to look all day or are you going to kiss me?"

Luther took a step, then another...then a few more and stopped in front of her. He nervously reached his hands out and touch her soft, milk white shoulders. Mary smiled and leaned forward to kiss him. He embraced her and ran his hands gently up and down her curves. She kissed his neck as she unbuttoned his blue shirt.

He pulled the straps of her slip over her shoulders and down. It fell to her ankles like a cloud falling to the ground from heaven. He buried his face in her soft auburn hair and whispered,"Sweet Mary....I love you more than my life....more than my very soul." Mary kissed his shoulder and said,"I love you the same....I do so love you Luther McLidden.

Mary took Luther's hands and led him to the table cloth covered mill stone. She sat first and pulled him to her. They made love as the breeze blew in falling leaves through the broken out window and swirled around them like colorful angels. It felt to Mary as if the old mill had come to life....grinding and vibrating the building.

Luther was crying out as if every nerve and muscle in his body was being consumed with fires of pleasure! Mary screamed as the dam began to give way and flood her valley with a trembling, quaking rush of relief. Luther collapsed on her and kissed away tears of satisfaction.

They had met at the old mill house a few more times over the winter and made love by the fireplace. The day after Christmas...Luther proposed to Mary and gave her a silver ring he had made from a coin. She told him that it was more beautiful to her than all of the jewelry in her father's store. Not another man in the world could even touch the shadow of her handsome red haired Irish lover.  She was going to have him, hell or high water!

It was February 14th. when Luther had last seen Mary. He scanned through the people as he walked up the hill to a large gathering. Men were arguing with a country store owner who had locked his doors. Luther made his way through the crowd of babies crying in their mother's arms and angry men.

The store owner was brandishing a shotgun and yelling nervously for the men to stay back! Luther calmly walked up to the man and said,"Put the gun down sir...if ya don't...they're sure to kill ya.  Wee ones are crying from hunger and cold....no shotgun will stop the gentlemen from easing their hurts."

The crowd became silent as Luther reached to take the gun. He slipped it from the man's hands as the man hung his head and cried. The store owner took a key from his coat pocket and opened the door. An old man stepped up first and said,"You'll be paid for all that we use, every penny...just mark it down."

Luther got himself a small bite to eat after the women and children were fed. He continued looking for Mary in the crowd of people. Every hat on every lady was a target of his eyes. He climbed up on the roof of the store and could see the miles of destruction. He could even see the top of the old Cane Mill house where he and Mary met so many times.

He looked up at the cold clouds of March and prayed,"Help me find her....Lord I need to find the only treasure I've ever held in my hands." He climbed back down and checked the entire population of the hill three more times before darkness fell. Five bonfires were lit and the people huddled around each one. Luther would take a torch to the edges of the water to see if it had receded.

It was three days past when the water had gone down enough to get off of the hill. Luther piled into a boat with other man as he convinced them to take him to the eastern part of the city. On the way, they rescued a young boy and a dog from a debris filled willow tree. Had the dog not been barking, they might have been found far them too late. Luther gave the boy and dog each a muffin he had stowed away in his coat pocket. He even gave the little fellow his cap.
Luther and the other men were sickened by the floating bodies they saw. Arms and legs jutted out from mud covered rubble.

He got out of the boat near where Mary lived. The few houses that were still standing were leaning or half washed away. He cried out for Mary while lifting boards and removing brush. He cried out until his voice was a hoarse whisper.

Luther fell to his knees by what use to be her home. He had already searched there twice. He remembered a lock of her hair that was tied with a piece of lace.  Mary had pinned it in the inside front of his hat. He had forgotten to take it out when he gave his cap to the boy. So very exhausted, he fell to his knees and cried,"Mary come to me, please Mary come to me."

The sun was peeking through the clouds as Mary stepped on boards that were laid around the Red Cross tent. The bottom of her dress was filthy with mud as she carried a bottle of milk to a waiting mother and baby. Mary had been working for days...helping out the Red Cross but not one minute went by without a thought of Luther. Her father was missing because he had gone to save his inventory....Mary feared that he was gone for good.

People were coming into the camp...so hungry...so cold and so lost. Mary had already cried so many times for the sorrows she witnessed and horrific stories told. She was making her way back to the tent when she caught a little boy from the corner of her eye. He was wearing a gray wool cap...far too big for him. She suddenly lost her footing on the board...slipped and fell in the mud.

She cried out to the little boy,"Where did you get that cap?" The little boy looked at her but didn't say a word. She screamed at him,"Where did you get that cap?" She started crying as she stepped through the thick mud towards the little boy. A man reached to help her...she smacked his hand away and stumbled to take the cap from the little boy.

People who were walking with him scorned her as she desperately looked inside the gray wool cap. She saw the lock of hair tied in lace and collapsed. A man jerked the cap from her hand and gave it back to the boy as Mary cried,"Where did you find the cap....please...where?" The boy nervously said,"On...on,on..a board by...by the Vine street school."

Mary begged him,"Take me, show me, please take me where you found it?" An old man stepped up and said,"Miss, there's nothing at Vine street...it's covered in five feet of mud...we are the last of the folks, the only ones left there are the body collectors and men with guns."

Mary stood up and said,"I don't care what you say, I will go to Vine street and I will find him!" A woman tried to stop her put Mary jerked away and plodded through the mud. She held the laced lock of hair tightly in her hand and cried. She hadn't walked a hundred yards when she saw a woman wearing Luther's coat. Mary fainted.

The dim lantern in the tent came into focus as Mary began to wake up. She was covered in blankets and heard the voices of nurses and people who were being taken care of. Mary looked up at the white canvas and thought of Luther as her tears rolled from the corners of her eyes. She slowly turned to her side and sobbed.

The little boy who was wearing Luther's cap came and stood by her. She sniffled and reached out her hand to take his. The little boy softly said,"I...I...got to tell you...uh..uh..the cap...uh..uh..he gave it to me." Mary squeezed his hand as she propped up on her side and said,"Who, who gave it to you?" The little boy pointed behind her. Mary turned and cried out in joy! It was Luther, grinning from ear to ear.

He bent down to her and she hugged him so tight that he could barely talk. The little boy giggled as Luther gave him a cinnamon drop and shewed him away. Mary kissed and kissed and kissed him. Luther chucked,"My sweet Mary...are ya gonna kiss every freckle on my face?" Mary put her hands to each side of his face and cried,"Every little one on every inch of you!"

A nurse standing by, blushed and smiled as the hugging and kissing continued. Luther explained that he told the little boy to say he found the cap in case someone accused him of stealing it. He had also given a woman his coat who was wet and shivering.

Luther and Mary were together again and that was all that counted in the world to them.

They did eventually move to California. They loved the weather and the beautiful beaches. They even didn't mind the earth quakes. After all, the shaking just reminded them of making love on the old mill stone, before the 1913 Great Flood.

For Women....A Man of Lions

Beth Kainen sat in the cafe booth across from her office building and saw him through the reflection of her face on the window. He was standing under the canopy with his hands in his dark brown trench coat pockets. His thick, curly blond hair draped over his broad shoulders like a lion's mane. His faded jeans were tucked into knee high boots and his white shirt was tucked neatly behind a brass belt buckle.

She caught herself staring at him when the steam from the coffee tickled her nose. She began reflecting on her life as the rain fell on the world outside. Here she was....forty five years old, working as an account manager....living in a small apartment...scattered with good and bad memories. Her husband of twenty three years had left her for a "Hooters" girl last spring. Her son and daughter were both in college and occasionally called when they needed to hear,"I love you", attached to money.

Beth wondered how her life became so screwed up...where was the turning point to dysfunction? The man who dazzled her heart in college was now dazzling a much younger woman with his Platinum Visa. She loved her children but knew they were far too self centered. She couldn't have a calm conversation with her daughter and her son was clueless about any kind of responsibility. Beth could feel the rain falling inside her soul. She had been a "stay at home mom" for 22 years and it seemed to her...as if she failed at being a wife and a mother.

She stared down at her hands wrapped around the warm cup and thought of all the work they had done. The cleaning, laundry, prepared meals, changed diapers, drove to run errands, gave her husband satisfaction and applied her makeup to appease the world. She felt tiny tears form in her eyes as she heard,"Are you alright Miss?

She looked up and saw it was the man who had been across the street under the canopy. She focuses on his more than beautiful face...almost angelic. He had such wonderful puppy dog brown eyes that bled kindness in harmony with his smile. Beth wiped her eyes and said,"I'm fine.....thank you...I was just plodding through memories....I guess the rain brought it on."

He asked,"Mind if I sit here with you?" She melted at the soft, deep tone of his caring voice and she said,"That would be nice...that would be very nice." He took off his coat...folded it and laid it on the booth seat and sat across from her. Beth couldn't help looking at the form of his body...especially the rather plump place between the pockets.

He ordered black coffee from the waitress behind the counter and said to Beth,"This might sound strange...but I felt you were troubled from across the street." Beth sipped her coffee and smiled a little as he went on saying,"I lived with a pride of lions for almost a year...a female had been hurt by a wildebeast...two of the males and even myself, felt it and ran to her." He hung his head...saying,"She was hurt so bad...we stayed all night and most of the next day until she died with her head in my lap."

Beth was looking at him with her eyes wide open as he embarrassingly said,"I don't know why I told you that...I just..." She cut him off and said,"No...no...wow...you actually lived with lions?" The waitress brought his cup of coffee...sat it on the table as he smiled and said to Beth,"Yes I did...I still have a few scratch scars to prove it...lions can be a bit rough when they play."

He reached his hand across the table and said,"I probably should have introduced myself before my life story...my name is Sampson Ewinds...but you can call me Sam....and you are?" Beth smiled and said,"Beth Kainen...and you can call me Beth." She saw that his hand was strong and smooth...so manly yet his touch was so soft. He then smiled big...saying,"You are an amazingly beautiful woman." Beth blushed and said,"I haven't heard that in a long time...thank you."

Her cell phone rang...she looked at her watch and it was 9:14 AM. She said out loud,"Oh God...I'ts my work...I'm late...I'm sorry but I have to go!" Sam reached and closed her cell phone. She said desperately,"Why did you do that?" He looked into her eyes and said,"Come to Africa with me...right now."
Beth pulled her hand away...opened her cell phone back up to call and said,"I'm sorry...but that is the craziest thing I've ever heard...we've just met and you want me to go with you....to Africa? Sam smiled and said,"Why not....we can be on my jet in less than an hour.....I want to get to know you, Beth Kainen."

Beth blushed....looked out at the rain and said,"I can't...it's just too crazy... I really have to go to work." She started to get up and he said,"I'll bet you a million dollars that I can kiss you without touching you." Beth eased back in her seat...giggled and said,"Oh...what the hell...I'm already late...might as well be later." She was so intrigued by this young man...a little afraid but wildly curious. She looked at him and said,"I don't have a million dollars to bet." He smiled and said,"If you had a million dollars...would you go to Africa with me?"

Beth smiled and said,"Sure...if I had that much money...sure...I would go." Sam said,"OK...I'll bet my million dollars and you put up your earrings." Beth laughed and said,"My earrings....they might be worth a hundred dollars." Sam smiled and softly said,"But those earrings are on the most beautiful woman I've ever seen....that makes them worth a million dollars."

Beth melted at the compliment and said,"OK...the bet is on....kiss me without touching me." Sam leaned over the table...slowly moved his face to her....his lips were less than an inch from hers...suddenly he kissed her softly." Beth bit her bottom lip as he backed away...he then said,"I guess I lose...I touched you." He reached in his coat pocket and got a worn black leather checkbook cover...opened it and asked Beth for a pen."

Beth laughed and said, "OK...you are going to write me a check for a million dollars...sure...I can at least provide the pen." She continued to giggle as he wrote her out a check for one million dollars. He ripped it from the book and handed it to her. Beth looked at the check and said,"This is silly." Sam gave her a serious look and said...call the bank....the check is good...you can afford to go to Africa with me now." Beth tried to hand him back the check but he insisted she call.

Beth called the bank and quickly found out that the check could be cashed. She almost fainted when the teller told her,"Yes..Mr. Ewinds is our very most valued customer." Beth closed her cell phone...looked at Sam and said,"Is this for real?" Sam smiled and said,"As real as the rain." Beth felt confused, nervous, wonderful, excited and nauseous at the same time. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she said,"I don't want to be hurt Sam...please...I don't want to be hurt."

Sam took her hands...looked in her eyes and softly said,"I don't want you to be hurt...I want you to go to Africa with me and see the lions...I've never asked another person in the world to go anywhere with me...I feel this will be good for both of us...please Beth....come with me...please?" Beth looked out at the rain and back in his brown eyes...saying,"Why me Sam...I must be close to twice your age...why me?"

Sam wiped her tears gently away with his right hand fingers and said,"I felt you were wounded and I came across the street...I've never felt that before...I want you to walk with me among the lions....I want you to feel what I feel....I can feel your soul Beth...you are a lioness at heart....I need to be with you.....I know this seems crazy to you....it seems just as crazy to me but it is how I feel...I need you to go to Africa with me...please Beth?"

Beth's phone rang again...she opened it and shut it off. She looked at Sam, smiled and said,"OK....OK...I'll go but under one condition." Sam grinned and said,"Name it." Beth said,"I can come back home at anytime...no questions asked?" Sam agreed as two waitresses and three customers clapped their hands. Sam and Beth left the cafe and took a cab straight to the airport.
As they boarded the jet....Sam's pilot looked at him strange and said,"Wow Sam....this is a first...a passenger?" It made Beth feel good when the pilot said that. Beth had traveled in commercial jets before but this was like a royal carriage. She noticed the corner of a bed sticking out from behind a red velvet curtain. It made her feel a little uneasy. Sam saw her looking at it and said,"I take a nap now and then on long trips." Beth smiled at him and said,"Oh...you mean the bed....naps...yes."

Sam grinned as they became seated for take off. An old gentleman came from behind the curtain and said,"Sir...I see you have a guest...would you like something to drink?" Sam said,"Beth...this is Nigel....Nigel this is Beth." The old man bowed, smiled and said,"Pleased to meet you Beth....I would guess you are going to Kilimanjaro with us?"

Sam chuckled and said,"Yes she is...I have invited her to accompany me on the Serengeti...the lions and I are going to entertain this beautiful lady." Nigel said,"Ah yes...the wonderful lions sir." He looked at Beth...saying,"You are in for a very rare delight...they are truly the Kings and Queens of the earth." Nigel later brought their drinks as Beth and Sam talked about their lives. Sam Ewinds was born into millions.... had given much of it to charities for the care of children and animals around the world.

In the hours that they were on the plane...they covered a lifetime of stories. Love, joy and pain swirled in their words and eyes. Beth even wondered if they had been lovers in past lives. Sam wondered the same. They landed at the Kiliminjaro airport and a limousine took them to their motel. They stayed up most of the night talking. Sam and Beth fell asleep laying on the large canopy bed and woke up...holding hands. They had a late breakfast and went shopping for clothing. Beth laughed at Sam because he bought everything she looked at or picked up.

During the day she called her son and daughter...simply telling them she was on a vacation and would call them when she got home. She left her ex-husband a message on his work phone,"Paul...I'm in Africa...toodles." It wasn't long before they were in a jeep with a truck behind them headed for the plains. It was breathtaking to Beth....the people, animals and landscape were so wonderful. Sam drove through and by villages where people waved and sometimes cheered. The children all loved him and a couple of times he played games with them.

Dusk came around and they sat up camp near a cluster of Umbrella trees. Sam, Beth and two native hired hands, talked by the campfire. The fire light on Sam's face made him look bronze. Beth stared at him often as he joked and laughed with the men. They went to sleep that night with Sam holding Beth in his arms. Morning came and one of the men was cooking eggs and bacon as they woke up. Sam handed her a cup of coffee and Beth felt like she was in heaven.

Sam spoke up....we eat breakfast and then to the lions. After breakfast...Sam strapped a back pack on and they headed out. The two men stayed behind at camp. Beth was a little worried that she and Sam were now alone. Sam could tell and comforted her by holding her hand and telling her he had done this many, many times. They walked and saw a herd of wildebeests, gazelles and a few elephants in the distant plains.

Sam was looking for the lions and finally saw them in the high grass. It was the same pride he had spent so much time with before. An older male stood up in the grass and stared at them. He slowly walked towards them as two females stood. The slight breeze was blowing from behind Sam and Beth. Beth could see their yellow eyes as Sam told her,"Take off your clothes...all of your clothing...now."

Sam began stripping down and Beth reluctantly followed his advice. She had to sit with her pants to her knees and take her boots off. Sam chuckled,"You better hurry." He was completely naked before she got her underclothing off. She stood up and nervously fumbled with her bra as he pulled her white panties to her ankles. She said,"Hey" as Sam softly said,"Just take my hand...don't be afraid and move very slowly like I told you before."
Beth wanted to cry but was too excited and scared. The large male approached them slowly and the females stuck their heads in the air to smell. Sam pulled Beth towards the lion and said,"Hello King George...sorry to disturb your basking in the sun but I wanted you to meet a very special person." The lion obviously recognized Sam but insisted on investigating Beth. Sam whispered,"Stay still" as the male sniffed her. Sam gently put his arm around her waist and the lion sniffed at his hand on her hip. Sam whispered,"Reach slowly...very slowly and touch his mane."

Beth didn't want to but Sam insisted. She wound up not only touching the lion but petting him. The females circled them a few times and then came closer to make their approval. Beth stayed close to Sam as the pride eventually ignored them and went back to basking in the afternoon sun. Beth and Sam began to notice each other.... more than looking at the lions. Sam told her to kneel in the grass and watch him. He went to the large male...began rubbing his belly and the male rolled over on his back like a house cat.

As Sam played with the lions....Beth thought of how he fit in so well with them. His long blond hair. muscular body and the graceful way he moved was more than erotic. A cub started walking towards Beth and Sam whispered loudly,"Don't move at all...close your eyes tight and don't open them until I say it's clear....his mother might get jealous." Beth did exactly as he said. Within seconds she felt something brush her leg. She could feel the cub's breath on her hip.

She trembled as she felt a tongue on the small of her back. She felt licking on her arms, legs and then strangely her shoulders. She nervously whispered,"Sam...I'm scared...Sam...Sam." She felt his hand on the side of her face and she slowly opened her eyes to see him petting the cub and grinning. She whispered,"It licked me...does it mean it likes me?" Sam grinned saying,"It means I like you...the cub just got here."

Beth gritted her teeth, grinned and whispered loud,"Sam!" Then....she looked and saw what he meant by saying he liked her. This man was truly a lion in every way. The cub went back to his mother as Sam gently kissed Beth. Their kisses led to gentle touches. Beth could feel his long hair brushing her shoulders and face as he laid her back in the high grass.  She could feel his rock hard member against her left leg.  She felt the tightness of his back muscles with her hands and the warmth of his breath on her neck.

He moved to her aching breasts circled each nipple with his tongue and began to kiss, lick and suck them gently.  Beth moaned sotly as Sam kissed down her stomach to her mound.  He made little bites at her hair and swollen lips.  He carressed her clitoris with his bottom lip and moved it from side to side.  Her moans became louder and longer as he inserted his tongue and wiggled it wildly.  Beth screamed out,"Oh...oh...I'm ready Sam...I'm ready!"  Sam backed away and guided her to roll over.  He whispered loud,"Grab the grass."  Beth positioned her bottom up....laid her face down and grabbed stems of the tall grass in each hand.

Sam kissed her back as he slowly entered her soft, moist vagina from behind.  He cupped her breasts in his hands and began gently humping.  She gripped the grass tighter as his pace picked up.  He pinched her stiffened nipples between his fingers as Beth began bucking back at him.  Sam, quickly grabbed her shoulders and began to ram wildy!  He rammed so hard...Beth felt as if she was being spanked. Every long and deep thrust was bringing her closer to extasy!  She felt her toes bending and grasping the grass as she gritted her teeth...muffling her scream!  She felt the wild of Africa rush into her abdomen and flutter like a thousand birds swirling inside her....like a stampede quaking through her very being.

The gushing came like an African water fall...as her whole body trembled with an orgasm that drained her fluids and filled her soul with a pleasure she had never dreamed of.  Sam felt the hot soaking and heard her scream like a lioness!  Sam grabbed her hips and made his hardest thrust...holding her tightly against him as he filled her with pumps of his hot seed.  He roared like a lion as sweat dripped from his hair on the small of her back.  An aftershock of Beth's soaked vagina pushed his softening member from her.
Sam collapsed on the ground beside her and Beth eased into his arms.  Tears of total satisfaction filled their eyes as the near silent breeze swayed the high grass around them.

They laid in the high grass...wrapped in each others arms and slept an hour of the afternoon away in the middle of the pride. They made love three more times before they left for camp. Sam carried his backpack and Beth carried their clothes as the sight of the lions disappeared behind them. They got dressed under an Umbrella tree and went back to camp. They became inseparable. They even managed to get into one sleeping bag.

When they got back to civilization...their motel room was filled with flowers of all kinds. A large brass, claw foot bathtub was filled with pink champagne. Sam left for a while as Beth took a long hot shower. He returned as Beth was waiting by a bay window in her bath robe. He didn't say a word...he took her hand...led her to the bathtub...slowly took her robe off and helped her in the tub. She started to say something but he put his finger on her lips. He took his clothes off and quickly took a shower.

Beth sat in the champagne and sipped a taste from her cupped hands. Soon...Sam came out...lit candles and eased in the tub with her. Beth started to say something again but Sam looked at her and shook his head no. He took her hand...held it to his face and then her palm over his mouth. She felt something push into her hand. Sam pulled her hand away to reveal a diamond ring...a very large diamond....ring. Sam softly said,"Will you marry me Beth...please...marry me Beth?"

Beth smiled and the tears came flowing. She looked at the ring and then in his eyes....they both sparkled in the candle light.
Sam leaned forward and kissed the tears from her face. He backed away...smiled and said,"Well...will you?" Beth put the ring on her finger and whispered softly,"Yes....yes I will marry you...God yes...I will." Sam kissed her and said,"I'll have a Minister here by morning." Beth giggled and said,"Sam...Sam...in the morning....it feels like I'm caught in a hurricane." Sam smiled saying,"A hurricane of romance...I hope?"

Beth reached forward and hugged him. She buried her face in his damp hair and said,"I love you Sam Ewinds...I can't belive I'm saying it after knowing you for only three days but I love you....so...so much." Sam held her tight and said,"I love you too...I think I always have....you are my lioness." Beth gave him a playful growl...they tickled and wrestled in the tub until almost all of the champaign had splashed out. They made love in the tub....then the bed...then the floor...then on the balcony as the African moon smiled a soft light on their bodies.

Sam was a man of his word. A local Minister came and performed the marriage ceremony while Sam and Beth stood in their bath robes. After the Minister left....Beth sat on the bay window sill with Sam at her side and said,"Three days ago...I was going to work at a mediocre job....worried about my selfish kids and so sad over a failed marriage.....now I am here with the man of any woman's dreams...in the beautiful country of Africa...I am so happy....so happy Sam."

Sam got down on his knees in front of her. He looked down at her knees...kissed each one and looked up at her with tears in his eyes. Beth put her hands on his face and said,"Sam...what's wrong....why are you crying?" Sam softly said,"I have a confession....I should have told you but I didn't want you to marry me out of pity." Beth felt lightning go through her heart as she asked with concern,"What Sam...pity...what do you mean?"

Sam buried his face in her lap and cried,"I am dying, Beth...I have weeks at best." Beth stroked his hair and confusingly said,"That's crazy Sam....you're the picture of health....don't tell me that...don't!" Sam lifted his head and said,"It's true...an extrememly rare brain disease....it doesn't hurt...it only stings a little at times." Beth lifted him from her lap and jumped up...screaming,"Don't dammit....don't tell me this...I will not believe this.....dammit Sam...why did you even do all of this...why!"

Sam pleaded with her,"Please Beth...let's just enjoy each other....please!" Beth looked at him....he was so beautiful...like a wounded lion. She took a deep breath....took a step towards him and said,"OK Sam....OK....five minutes in your arms is worth more than a lifetime with anyone else in this world. She ran and hugged him! They kissed, cried, hugged and kissed.

They had two glorious months of marital bliss. They traveled the countryside of Africa and made love as wild as the Serengeti itself along the way. It was a warm beautiful day when Sam felt the disease beginning to take him. She drove them to beyond the old campsite. He stumbled as they walked towards the pride of lions that they had been with before.
Beth helped him take his clothes off and then she removed her clothing. She held Sam tight as they approached the lions. None of the lions stood but they all focused on Sam and Beth. Sam groaned and said,"I have one more confession....we don't have to be naked around the lions." Beth just smiled and helped him walk. The large male was the only one to sit up.

Beth sat down in the grass and helped Sam down. He laid his head in her lap and she gently stroked his hair. Sam could barely speak by then but managed to whisper,"I love you Beth." Beth's tears fell in his hair as he smiled at her. He whispered with a strain in his voice,"Don't cry....close your eyes....don't move...I'm with you...always with you, loving you in the winds Beth...always."

Beth closed her eyes and the male lion roared at the heavens with such might that Beth felt the ground vibrate! She opened her eyes and saw every lion standing in a circle around them. From deep in her soul...she screamed at the sky! She held Sam tight and sobbed as the lions laid beside them. Beth left his body in care of the lions until she returned with two men to bury him. A large white stone had already been chosen as his burial marker.

(It is the year 2112 as an old man walks with his sixteen year old granddaughter across the Serengeti plain. They come up to the grave as he says)"Here it is child....the grave of your great grandparents...Sampson and Beth Ewinds...he died eight months before I was born. She traveled the world with me tagging along....she always came back here...every year.

Local legend has it... that when the breeze blows over the grass...they can be heard...roaring like lions and making love." (The girl knelt by the grave and said)"Look grandpa...look how her name is engraved in the stone....Be thE winds....next to....The Man Of Lions."

Under One Tree

One early summer of my life, changed my life. I was there at the campus, waiting on my new girlfriend. I sat beneath an old oak tree....leaned against the trunk and just watched people. I was a bit early...I really didn't want to be late and disappoint her and I thought she might appreciate it.
People were walking from morning classes and to afternoon classes. I noticed an old professor going up the walkway. He looked like Einstein with red hair.. He stopped, turned and looked at me. I heard the word "Reader" in my mind. It was an old voice...a very old voice.
I felt uncomfortable and turned my attention to the lower limbs and leaves of the old tree. I soon found myself looking at the professor again. He had taken a few more steps but was still looking at me. "Reader" shouted in my mind! He then nodded, smiled and walked around the corner of the West Hall building.
It was a strange experience and even disturbing to hear a voice in my mind. I thought that the old guy must have been telepathic or something like that. Soon after, I saw two guys walking from the West Hall doors. One was talking and the other listening. I could hear what the listener was thinking.
"If you would pay your part of the rent, we could afford to go to the Steppenwolf concert tonight....I am so sick of you being such a loser", was what I was hearing in my mind. It was not actual words....it was emotion changing into words. The listener was smiling but it was a fake smile. They were both laughing as they disappeared into the parking lot.
I looked up at the massive limbs of the old tree and wondered at the sun light....skipping past the leaves as they were moved by the wind. This new experience felt a lot that way....emotions of people skipping through the air into my mind.
I began to hear emotions from people walking by.....some were nice, some serious, and a few that were vulgar. I was really getting in to this new thing of mine!
A girl wearing a white blouse tucked into a plaid skirt walked by and shyly smiled at me. She looked pretty modest compared to the other girls on campus. Her brown bangs just touched the top of her glasses and her hair draped her breasts like hiding a treasure. I smiled back at her and it was strange that I didn't pick up any emotion words.
I watched her walk to the curb side and stand as if she was waiting on someone. I returned to my reading of people but often turned to look at her. Strange....she kept getting prettier with each glance.
Finally....my girlfriend came out of the door. She was with two friends and they all were totally engrossed in a conversation. There she was....my strawberry blond bombshell. We had been on a few dates, we had lots of fun and she told me just last night that she really, really liked me. She saw me and gave me a wave.
I stood up and leaned on the old tree...to look cool for her, of course. She was walking towards me...talking with her friends.....smiling...giggling.......I read her emotions. "I can't believe he is here.....sure...I wanted him to pick me up but geeesh...stay in the damn car...don't be an eager loser waiting under that stupid tree", is what I read from her.
She was smiling at me all the while. I instantly felt like hell. I made up a lie and told her that I just stopped by to tell her that I couldn't go to the beach this afternoon. She looked a little surprised but said it was fine because she wanted to spend some time with her buds anyway.
I stood there under the tree as she blew me a kiss and waved goodbye. I acted like I caught it and when she turned away I put the kiss on my middle finger and flipped it back to her. She drove off with her giggling posse in her convertible Mustang.
I folded my arms, leaned back on the tree again and began to continue entertaining this new gift. There was joy...stress...pain...humor....sadness...worry...and each had their own mixture of questions and answers. "Mind if I join you," came out of the blue....weird....I was looking at a gay couple sharing a book on an iron bench.
She walked in front of me and smiled saying,"Is this your tree...or can anyone share the shade?" I saw it was the girl I kept glancing at, grinned and said, "Why yes...this is my tree but you are quite welcome to the shade." She introduced herself and told me that her ride didn't show up again. We talked a little about the campus and her classes. All through the conversation, I couldn't read a thing about her. Then it hit me....I didn't need to...she was being herself.
We were under one tree.

A serial killer, a spider and a moth.

He carried her down in the basement. The old wooden steps creaked as their weight bent the thin oak boards. He dumped her on a pile of past victim's clothes and grunted as he took off her shoes. He slowly peeled her socks off, revealing her rose red painted toenails. He mumbled,"Little whore." She was still drowsy from the blow to the back of her head and the lack of air in the trunk of his car. She mumbled in a hurting voice,"Please don't kill me....I want mommy...mommy....daddy...please don't."
He crawled over top of her and got right in her face and said,"If you're lucky...a spider will bite you." He then licked her forehead slowly and whispered,"Scream for me little whore...scream for me." She screamed as loud as she could and he slapped her until she stopped! He got up as she laid whimpering on the pile of clothes. He told her,"I'm going to the grocery to pick up some Pizza Rolls....I love Pizza Rolls...you can't have any because I only feed whores with light.....you can eat light you know....my daddy said you can...he made mommy eat light and she was saved from whoredom."
He told her that his name was Jimmy. He asked her for her name and she replied," Leena....my name is Leena....please let me go...please." Jimmy grinned and said,"Foolish bitch....you are my sunshine....my only sunshine.....I am chosen to feed you the light...you can't get out and no one can hear you scream....when I get back....you can eat some light for me." Leena curled up against the wall as Jimmy closed the massive 8 inch thick door.
A large brown spider fell on her knee from the plywood ceiling and scurried down her leg. She screamed and began crying. Leena thought to herself,"A spider, a damn spider....why am I so afraid of something so small?" Leena was shopping for her prom dress at the mall. She had bought a beautiful aqua blue skirt to match her lacy top. She was putting the box in her back seat when Jimmy knocked her out and abducted her. A wonderful day in May had turned into a nightmare. She was now in a 6 X 6 X 6 foot prison. At 16 years old...Leena was terrified that she would never see 17.
A single 25 watt light bulb was mounted on the wall across from her. She stared at the light. The spider that fell on her leg was now on the wall by the light. A moth came fluttering around the light bulb and landed about an inch from the spider. Leena got more tears in her eyes and cried for the moth to fly away. She didn't have the energy or even balance to stand so she crawled closer and tried to shew the moth away. With a sharp pain in the back of her head she laid down in the pile of clothing.
There were coats, pants, blouses, dresses, panties, bras, socks, nylons and even a wig. The clothes were a foot deep. She layed her head down by a white sweater and saw the dark blood stain around the edges at the neck. She gasped and lunged herself back against the wall. Looking back up at the light, she saw that the moth was still right by the spider and moving it's wings up and down. She cried,"Go ahead you f**k, get eaten...I don't care....you deserve it for being so damn stupid!" The moth lifted off and fluttered around the light again.
She heard the footsteps of Jimmy coming back into the basement. She tensed up and wrapped her arms around her bent up knees. She was shivering as he opened the door. He shined a bright flashlight in her face and said,"Supper time for Leena....my little brunette whore!" As Jimmy stood over her, Leena looked at the light and saw the moth land by the spider again. It suddenly came to her to eat the light and she would buy time....he might not kill her if she went along.
Jimmy got down on his knees....grabbed her blue jean shorts and pulled them off quickly. As he grabbed at her panties, Leena shouted,"Please Jimmy...feed me the light...I am starving for the light...please Jimmy!" Jimmy let go of her panties, leaned back and said,"No whore has acted like this before....no whore ever." He stuck the flashlight up to her mouth and Leena began acting like she was eating the light. Jimmy smiled and whispered,"That's my good little whore...eat the light for daddy...eat the light." Leena could see clearly now that Jimmy was a thinly built but strong man,,,his hair was white blond and he was wearing a black T shirt.
As she pretended to eat the light...he fondled with the buttons on her blouse...one by one he popped them off. He yanked at each side of her bra downward and exposed her breasts. Leena just kept eating at the light. Jimmy smiled and said,"My mother made me touch hers...daddy caught her and made her eat the light...he shoved a 5 cell flashlight down her throat...we changed the batteries every day until mommy went to heaven...she went to heaven because she ate the light." Leena didn't think about or comment on what he said...she simply kept munching at the light.
Jimmy jerked the light away and said,"That's enough for now....I'll give you breakfast in the morning little whore...you are a good little whore." Jimmy got up and told her to remove what was left of her clothing. He stepped out of the room for a minute and brought back a large clear trash bag. He took a knife from his pocket and cut the corners off...then cut a hole in between them. Jimmy gave her an evil grin and said,"Put this on little whore...only two others have made it to wearing my salvation gown....you are a lucky little whore aren't you?"
Leena immediately put the trash bag over her head and on to her body. Jimmy grinned and walked out as he closed the door. As the door locked, Leena moaned and stood up. She could barely stand but she knew that she had to move around. She walked closer to the light and saw the spider still there. She whispered to the spider,"Thank you my friend...you and the moth saved me for now....I wish you could tell me how to survive the next time." The spider scurried up the wall and into a small opening where the light wire went.
Leena let out a sad sigh and said,"I don't blame you...I would crawl in a hole too if I could. Leena noticed that the moth must have escaped when Jimmy opened the door. She sat back against the wall and cried a few minutes. She thought out loud,"My two little friends have left me and here I am all alone...waiting to die...waiting to die. The room light flickered on and of for about 30 seconds. She thought that it must be a way of torture because it made her even more horrified when the light went off.
Leena got on her knees and was saying her final prayers when she heard a muffled knock on the door. There was also a muffled scream. Leena was stunned....the voice wasn't Jimmy's...surely he doesn't have a partner? Leena dashed to the door and screamed as loud as she could. She put her ear against the door and could hear the word,"Police!" She beat on the door until it opened and she lunged to fall in the officers arms. She cried and cried more as the officer helped her up the steps.
They walked past Jimmy who was on the floor wearing her aqua blue skirt and nothing else.. He was foaming from his nose and mouth while shouting vulgar insults at the officer who had his knee on Jimmy's neck. As the officer and Leena walked out the door, a fireman came up and wrapped his coat around her. In no time, an ambulance arrived and the officer got in the back with Leena. On the way to the hospital Leena asked the officer,"How did you ever even find me?" The officer told her,"My partner and I were just driving by, a stupid moth came in the window and I had to stop....my partner noticed the lights flickering in the house...we checked it out and saw him in the window wearing a skirt."
Leena asked,"My prom skirt...he was wearing my prom skirt." The officer said,"Yes...we had a missing persons report on you and we had just interviewed the lady who sold you the aqua blue skirt.....that's what made us bust in...we saw him wearing a skirt..
Leena thought for a moment, started crying again and said,"My two little friends saved me...the moth made you stop and the spider shorted out the wire in the light. The officer had no idea what she was talking about....he simply held her hand... in the light.... of the ambulance.
